Refugees in Vancouver. 1886.

Here's a timely find from the City of Vancouver Archives. This photo shows a group of refugees gathered under and around a temporary shelter after the great fire destroyed most of Vancouver in 1886.

Here's a timely find from the City of Vancouver Archives. This photo shows a group of refugees gathered under and around a temporary shelter after the great fire destroyed most of Vancouver in 1886. Interesting to note is the stove, which was likely one of the few things that could be salvaged from the mess. There aren't too many photos of the aftermath but this one shows what life was like for the people of our city and is one of my favourites.

It's timely because the folks at Startland just started blogging about their efforts on V.I.A. today. Have a look at what the tech community is doing to help refugees in this post.
