This weekend (June 11-12) is the 6th annual Vancouver Mini Maker Faire at the PNE Forum. In case you don't know what Maker Faire is or why there has been five editions of it previously, let me explain.

Maker Faire is a celebration of creativity. It's often referred to as the greatest show and tell on earth because it's a two day event filled with passionate people sharing what they've created, built, invented or learned with all ages. It's a place to get your hands on some of the newest technology like 3D printers, robotics and electronics while at the same time, discovering traditional methods of making like textile arts that are timeless.

To help illustrate what Maker Faire is, I asked our of our featured Makers five questions. Jesse Toso is the creative mind behind Toso Wood Works. He's also know as the Stump Artist because he can wield a chainsaw and make stunning wood sculptures with one.

VMMF: How did you first get involved in and/or find out about the Maker community?

Jesse: I have been making things all my life. It was a couple years ago when I was asked to participate in the Mini Maker Faire and I said "Yes, please".

VMMF: What inspires you with your wood carving?

Jesse: Many things inspire me, but more often than not, it is the piece of wood itself. I have been collecting various pieces of wood over the years and love the process of discovering what is inside each piece. I am also inspired by other chainsaw carvers and woodworkers and what they can do with wood.

VMMF: How did you start using the chainsaw in your work?

Jesse: The first time I used a chainsaw was at the "Transformations on the Shore" Chainsaw Carving Competition in Campbell River in 2005 where I carved my first large piece, a phoenix rising from the flames, and I won $1000! I have been carving with chainsaws ever since.

VMMF: What are you looking forward to this weekend at Maker Faire?

Jesse: This weekend I am looking forward to sharing what I love with others who are interested and to hopefully inspire people to create art on their own.

VMMF: What's your dream project to carve?

Jesse: I have been dreaming of carving a complete larger-than-life chess set where each piece is as big or bigger than the people playing the game. How cool would that be?

That would be very cool indeed! Come and watch Jesse create with his chainsaw this weekend where he'll join over 150 exhibiting makers (our largest yet!).

New this year is the addition of a number of hands-on activity stations scattered amongst the booths. These activities include air rocket making, t-shirt modifications and a paint party. Tons of hands-on activities for kids of all ages. We'll also have a larger textile village covering all things fiber-based. Workshops and presentations will be going on all weekend as well. A fleet of food trucks will be on hand as you wander the Faire.

Advanced tickets available at MakerFaire.ca until Friday night or at the door of the PNE Forum on the weekend. Tickets are also good for the entire weekend with in-and-out privileges for both days of the Faire. Kids 5 and under are free!
