From the chaos of divorce, Master Recycler Leah Price creates intelligent, offbeat art from the unwanted, unloved, discarded trash of life.
We’re all guilty of it. Whether it’s a drawer, a closet or an entire room. We all have a space dedicated to a series of objects that we don’t know what to do with. Things we feel we might need one day, or more likely, things we’re not quite ready to let go of.
Local textile artist and upcycler Leah Price has given new life to these objects in her art show, Divorce: A Waste Audit. The collection, (which will be shown from her home), showcases a series of quirky pieces made entirely from the waste created by her family during a painful six-month period spurred on by separation.
During this time, Leah began taking stock of the unwanted items discovered while packing up her home of eighteen years. These would serve as the raw material of her art, allowing her to address to issues of memory, separation, mental health, parenting and Vancouver’s housing crisis while staying true to the constraints of her zero waste lifestyle.
Ultimately, Divorce: A Waste Audit is about giving purpose to the useless, unwanted, unloved and abandoned. It’s a healing process that offers new meaning to the objects we collect over our lifetime and the people and relationships we lose along the way.
Divorce: A Waste Audit runs from July 28 – 30 at 3642 W 10th Avenue from 4:00pm – 9:00pm daily. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research.
