Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre opened its doors to the public only eight months after breaking ground. It was November 7, 1927 when Vancouverites lined up around the block to see Marie White and the Blue Slickers, followed by a comic revue, dance and a short lm (Phyllis Haver in The Wise Wife). The final bill for construction and furnishing was somewhere near $1.25 million, most of it visible; the gold-leafed ceiling alone was worth $100,000. The theatre boasted a number of exceptional accessories for its time, including crystal chandeliers, silk wall hangings, gold leaf, air conditioning and a $45,000 organ.
