Courthouse Square
Prior to World War I, Victory Square was known as Courthouse Square, being the site
of an impressive domed provincial courthouse. This building was demolished just prior to the war and the law courts moved uptown to Georgia Street. The site was redeveloped as a park after the war, using money donated by the Southam family, owners of the Province newspaper, located in a building across Cambie Street. When the cenotaph was added, the name was changed to Victory Square.
