Candy Protests

Determined to get back their five-cent candy bars, and willing to ridicule those who had caved in to the big candy corporations, these children were part of the 1947 nationwide protests against an inflationary three-cent rise in candy bar prices. Cold War paranoia prevailed, with allegations that some children were associated with the National Federation of Labour Youth, a Communist organization. But in the end the price of chocolate bars was lowered—by one cent.
