Mayor Louis Taylor and Teddy Roosevelt

Mayor Louis Taylor (at right, holding hat low) escorts former US president Teddy Roosevelt through a throng of well-wishers to a waiting limousine. Roosevelt, who had arrived aboard the CPR, was stopping off briefly in the city on his way to San Francisco.

At the time he was a controversial figure in the US for his outspoken advocacy of an American entry into the war against Germany. Speaking from the back of the car, he told the crowd that Canadians should be proud that they had responded to “the great rallying call of Empire.”
