We launched Places That Matter in 2011 to celebrate Vancouver's 125th anniversary of incorporation as a city. Since then we had free public plaque presentations to celebrate the history of 85 sites in Vancouver that were nominated and selected by the public. We connected with knowledgeable and passionate community members who shared personal history, amazing images, artifacts, stories and a deep appreciation for these hidden gems. We always wanted to be able to share more information with the public, after the initial presentations, to keep the project alive online and accessible for everyone. Thanks to partial funding from a Heritage BC's Heritage Legacy Fund, the Vancouver Historical Society, and Split Mango Media Inc, we have a new website!

We've been busy all summer testing, editing and adding content to the Places That Matter Community History Resource! We have edited the webpages of about 30 of the 85 sites that received plaques from 2011-2016. We continue to work on the research, with help from community contributors and various archives and historians. A MAP shows the sites' location around the city, and takes you to the individual pages for more information.

One of the key features of the website, along with each site's plaque text, an image gallery, video and historical context, is the "tell us your story" section at the bottom of the webpage. Our hope is that whether or not you are familiar with a place that you'll share a few words, comments, a photo or ask a question about its past, present or future. We will continue to add community contributions to show the layers of history at each site, and to enrich the diversity of stories associated with these places. What do you see missing from these places that matter stories? Let us know your connections. Explore the site.
