Fire burning inside Stanley Park cedar tree

A slow burn

A fire is burning inside a tree at Stanley Park. It started Thursday morning and has been burning ever since, according to the park board, which was notifed at 8 a.m. Friday morning.

Someone who was flying over the park noticed the smoke and contacted the Vancouver fire department. The park board doesn't know how the fire started but it isn't out yet.

It started inside the tree at the base and is moving towards the top. The park board expects the tree will fall down. Park rangers are at the scene and they will call the fire department, which left fire hoses at the site, when necessary. There is no danger of it spreading. It's difficult to douse the fire because of its location in the tree and there's a risk of the tree toppling.

The Vancouver Park Board posted a video of the incident earlier today on social media, which shows smoke coming out of the tree.
