Richmond Mounties are on the lookout right now for car thieves with a particular penchant for a specific, older car.

Over the past weekend, thieves stole four Honda Civics from the 1990-1999 model years throughout Richmond.

According to police, due to the age of these vehicles, none were equipped with a factory-installed immobilizer system.

In 2007, however, such systems became mandatory for new vehicles in Canada.

As such, Richmond RCMP is asking local residents who own these Hondas to “strongly consider the use of an anti-theft device whenever possible.”

Such devices, say police, could include a steering wheel lock, aftermarket alarm or aftermarket immobilizer system - the use of these devices can greatly reduce theft.

Police say the older Hondas are being specifically targeted because they can be stolen extremely quickly and may be used to commit other crimes.

In May, the Richmond News reported how a thief tried twice to steal Honda SUVs in quick succession in broad daylight, the latter attempt being successful, right in front of the owner.
