City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto has announced he won’t be seeking re-election in the upcoming October municipal election.

A message from the mayor was posted to the city’s website Tuesday afternoon with the announcement.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve our community for almost 25 years – 13 as mayor and 12 as councillor,” Mussatto states in the message. “It has been an incredible experience and I feel blessed to have been part of one of the best communities to live in anywhere.”

The mayor’s message also notes some of the initiatives he has helped lead through council, such as the rejuvenation of Lower Lonsdale including work on the new Polygon Gallery and museum site, new artificial turf soccer fields and park redevelopments, the Spirit Trail and Green Necklace projects and a new home base for North Shore Rescue.

Mussatto also noted his seven years as chair of Metro Vancouver’s utilities committee, pointing to accomplishments including completion of the Capilano–Seymour Twin Water Tunnels project and water conservation measures.

“Now it is time to move on to new challenges and I do so knowing that our city is in good hands and up for the future ahead. It has been a real honour and I feel blessed,” he states.

Neither District of North Vancouver Mayor Richard Walton nor District of West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith have indicated whether they intend to run again.

The upcoming municipal elections will be held Oct. 20.
