V.I.A.'s parent company, Glacier Media, unveiled a new online publication today in collaboration with Village Media, the successful Ontario-based digital news network.

Kamloops Matters is the city's new go-to hyper-local community news site. They'll publish the latest local news, current events, obituaries and feature stories on this city they're proud to call home. They'll also be publishing breaking B.C., national, world, business and sports news.

The operation launched with 6 full-time employees adjacent the Thompson River. Bentley Yamaura is the General Manager, Tereza Verenca is Editor. Their office is opening up soon on Seymour Street in the heart of downtown Kamloops and they've hit the ground running with a ton of stories for - and about - the local community.

Tereza tells me, "We're so excited to be the boots on the ground for this new publication. Our team of talented journalists is here to tell stories that matter to the people of Kamloops, in an engaging and meaningful way. We can't wait to see you out in the community!".

In a time when the trend in media seems to be consolidating and laying people off, it's been inspiring to see Glacier investing more into community news. This is the first time our company has launched a standalone local news gathering operation that's digital-only.

And it won't be the last; there are more publications like this on the near horizon for communities in B.C..

I asked the President of Glacier Media Digital (COUGH... my boss... COUGH), Alvin Brouwer, why it's important that we keep growing our presence. He says "I think local news has never been more important. It's important that politicians - and the system itself - need to be held to account. News has to be accurate, truthful, and timely."

More than delivering hard news, Alvin tells me the aim of Kamloops Matters is to be "working with the community on whatever's going on in it. We want to help Kamloops connect."

The other thing they're doing is selling Glacier's class-leading digital services. Website builds, programmatic advertising, SEO, SEM, social media, content marketing solutions and more. Helping local businesses navigate a constantly changing digital environment is the goal there.
