The Vancouver Pride Society has cancelled the 2018 Davie Street Party over financial concerns.

The VPS board and staff made the decision to cancel the annual event after a review of the organization's financial position and budget.

In a release, VPS said the Davie Street Party is their most expensive event to produce and they were determining how to best recover from a deficit in 2017.

In 2017 the Davie Street Party cost $209,183 in total. The City of Vancouver and regulatory costs for the event costs about $79,500 with policing/security/traffic management being over $37,000 of the total cost.

VPS executive director Andrea Arnot said only the Davie Street Party event is cancelled and all other events, including the Pride Parade are happening this year.

Arnot said Pride Premiere, "an outdoor dance party" is happening on July 27 in the new Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza and "that's an expanded version of what we did last year."

Organizers said they will work with their event partners and the city to reimagine the Davie Street Party event for 2019.

Pride Week runs from July 30 to August 5 and this year marks the 40th anniversary of Pride in Vancouver.
