Three women from Winnipeg, Manitoba are raising funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis Canada by canoeing across the country.

Kendra Hurley, Rylea McEvoy and Claire Davis leave from Fraser River Park in Vancouver at 9 a.m.

"Hopefully some people come out and see us off," Hurley said.

Byway Babes will paddle, hike and portage their way across the country for about six-months before reaching Saint John, New Brunswick and "we absolutely invite local paddlers to travel along with us."

Hurley said they've been preparing for two years by taking courses in wilderness first aid, whitewater canoeing, undergoing coldwater training and working with a personal trainer.

McEvoy first came up with the idea to do a cross country canoe trip after high school with her grandma but "life got in the way and we decided to do it," said Hurley.

"We wanted to do it for a cause. Of course because Claire's involved and she has cystic fibrosis it was a really obvious choice what cause we wanted to raise funds and awareness for."

The goal is to raise a total of $25,000 for cystic fibrosis and she said they have already raised $8,000 during a walk for the cause in Winnipeg last year.
