North Vancouver RMCP are investigating after a driver struck a six-year-old walking to school Monday morning.
Police say the boy was on the sidewalk with a group of friends on Ridgewood Drive near Highland Boulevard just before 9 a.m. when a driver made a U-turn into a driveway to avoid construction traffic.
“In doing so, (the vehicle) struck the little guy as he was walking eastbound,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.
The boy was taken to Lions Gate Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released, De Jong said. The incident is still under investigation but the driver, a North Vancouver man in his 50s, will likely face charges, De Jong said.
“They will be ticketing him. They just aren’t sure when and how yet. It depends on the condition of this little guy,” De Jong added.
De Jong said the incident should serve as a warning to drivers.
“It doesn’t matter where you are in your vehicle, whether it’s a u-turn or a coming out of line of traffic: Pay attention. Especially in an area where kids may be walking. Driver beware all the time,” he said.
