OPINION: The government's 'BC Cannabis Stores' branding hits the mark

The B.C. government announced its legislation planned for recreational cannabis today, and at the same time dropped the information about where you're going to be able to legally buy weed from the government in our province (you'll also be able to buy in private stores).

The BC Liquor Distribution Branch will be managing a new standalone operation under the name BC Cannabis Stores. Opening their first retail location by the end of this summer, they also plan to do an e-commerce site.

The brand was developed in-house at the LDB and, not surprisingly, it utilizes the same look (and typefaces) as the BC Liquor Stores branding that we've come to know and trust over the decades.

It manages to evoke good feelings around B.C. heritage and, with that, a sense of trust (and being open on Sundays since the 1990s!). They could have taken an even more sterile approach, or gone the other direction and went with something too creative. They went with Goldilocks good.

What they've done here is a great start. It's one tiny piece of the overall equation of regulation and, depending on who you ask, the entire thing could end up being either a great success or an epic failure.

Speaking as someone who spent a decade working in graphic design and branding I have to say that they've really hit the mark with their visual identity. Chalk up one win for the government weed people.
