Maclean's recently released an "in-depth interactive tool" which you can use to chart the city with the highest murder rate, if you're charting out your 2018 Canadian travel plans and looking to avoid certain places (it's Thompson, Manitoba).

Canada's Most Dangerous Places 2018 lays out rankings of crime in major centres, and what might surprise you is that the top 24 most dangerous cities in the country are all in Western Canada.

It isn't until number 25 that any city located East of Manitoba appears on the list, giving the West the dubious distinction of being more dangerous than the East.

Overall our city of Vancouver isn't horrible, ranked at number 35. We came in below Surrey (who rank 32nd) but well above North Vancouver (who rest in a not-super-scary 71st place).

Courtenay is a place you might get murdered in British Columbia, ranking 3rd in Canada in this category. Langley City is the best place to have your home broken into, sitting at 3rd on the national ranking for B&Es. Prince Rupert is the 4th most likely place you'll get your butt kicked in Canada, ranking high for assaults.

The tool obviously only takes police-reported crime into consideration so there's a margin of error to think about. But as an overview of communities with more crime than others, it's pretty accurate.

Learn about their methodology in ranking cities HERE. Then dig into the tool HERE and click around to see how your hometown stacks up for different types of crime.
