Vancouverites can pre-purchase trees online for $10 through the park board's spring tree sale.

"The tree sale offers an opportunity for members of the public to choose a tree at a discount to plant in their yard and make their own contribution to enhancing the urban forest canopy," says Dana McDonald, the park board's environmental stewardship coordinator.

Locals can buy up to three trees per household and help meet the city's goal of planting 150,000 trees by 2020.

"We have a variety of fruit trees including cherries, apples, figs and plums. We also have shade trees and flowering trees," says McDonald.

The city has a #treelationship quiz to help people determine which tree is right for their yard.

If people are not able to take part in the online sale they can visit a participating nursery, such as Figaro's Garden, Hunter's Garden Centre or Gardenworks and get $20 off a tree valued at $50 or more.

Residents must present their receipt and photo ID with proof of Vancouver address to pick up the trees at Hillcrest Centre on May 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or May 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A selection of trees and unclaimed trees will be available for cash sale on site on May 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
