Nine months after a cyclist was killed in a collision with a driver on Keith Road in North Vancouver, charges have been sworn in court.

During the evening of July 30, 2017, a Vancouver man was headed down the Keith Road hill on his bike when, police say, a driver attempting to turn left onto Shavington Street pulled into the cyclist’s path.

Crews attempted CPR but 41-year-old Lukas Drake was pronounced dead at the scene. A “ghost bike” memorial is still chained to a tree nearby on Shavington.

The RCMP called in the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, which spent months investigating the incident before forwarding a request for charges to the Crown.

North Vancouver resident Rhys Lee William Howie, 33, made his first appearance in court last week. The Crown has sworn charges of driving without due care and attention, driving without reasonable consideration, and failing to yield right of way on the left turn.

Howie’s next court date is May 23.
