A new area code, 672, will be gradually introduced in B.C. starting on May 4, 2019 to meet the growing demand for new telephone numbers.
The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) directed the Canadian Numbering Administer (CNA) to set aside 672 as the province's new area code earlier this year.
The CRTC determined that the other four area codes in B.C. would be exhausted by May, 2020.
"The new area code 672 will be added to the current 604, 250, 778 and 236 area codes already in use in British Columbia," says Glen Brown, director of the CNA in a release.
The first area code in B.C. is 604 and was introduced in 1947. In 1996, area code 250 was introduced to cover most of the province except the Lower Mainland.
Area code 778 was added in 2001 to meet increasing demand in the Lower Mainland and was extended to cover the entire province in 2007. In 2013, a fourth area code, 236, was introduced to cover the entire province.
