Children that would normally not be able to enjoy boating due to financial, mobility or other challenges were treated to a day of pirate-themed fun in Vancouver.
On June 9, over 500 kids with special needs participated the annual Boat for Hope fundraiser hosted by Variety - The Children's Charity and outboard motor company Evinrude.
The event brought kids of all ages and their families to the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club to hunt for treasure, fill their loot bags, have water fights with marauding pirate ships and end the voyage with a barbecue.
“We are thrilled to be a part of Boat for Hope again this year,” says Ani, whose son, Anthony, participated in this year’s event. “It’s a day where it doesn’t matter that my child has special needs. Our family just gets to enjoy time on the water and feel included.”

Evinrude dealer, Haruna Sales and Service, the Canadian Coast Guard, police, and fire department provided the 24 boats that became pirate ships.
“We’re proud to support Variety’s efforts to provide hundreds of children with special needs the opportunity to experience the joy of boating,” says Evinrude VP and general manager Tracy Crocker.
Boat for Hope has already raised over $40,000 this year by holding fundraising events across the province.
“Boat for Hope not only creates an incredible and interactive experience for children with special needs but also raises funds to provide health care support directly to children throughout British Columbia,” says Cally Wesson, CEO, Variety - the Children’s Charity.
Our fundraising goes until the end of June so we are looking to raise a lot more for children in British Columbia,” she says.
The next Boat for Hope event will be in Kelowna on June 23.
