A Burnaby environmentalist is once again calling on regulators to crack down on Trans Mountain for polluting a Burnaby Mountain creek with sediment.
John Preissl was documenting what he called a disgraceful scene on Wednesday, June 13.
Eagle Creek was a deep brown colour as it flowed from a culvert leaving Kinder Morgan’s tank farm property. Preissl said the sediment suspended in the water following a heavy rain was the worst he has seen in the years he’s spent monitoring the area.
“This is actually a salmon killer,” he said. “This stuff here gets into their gills and smothers the small, little juvenile fish. It’s a disgrace, but that’s what that is.”
He said Trans Mountain’s recent excavation work on the property and lack of sediment filtration was to blame.
Trans Mountain, however, said their tests found the sediment originated upstream from its facility ``and is unrelated to activity on our site.``
On Wednesday, Preissl contacted the National Energy Board, the City of Burnaby, B.C.’s Environment Ministry and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (FOC).
A city staff member came to the mountain and took a water sample, he said.
City staff did not respond to repeated requests for comment from the NOW.
The Now has asked for comment from FOC and the NEB.
In April, the NEB found that Trans Mountain neglected safeguards against construction runoff into a Silver Creek tributary. Both federal and provincial regulators investigated complaints from Preissl, but the water samples they took did not find elevated sediment levels.
Preissl believes the negative test was because they did not test when sediment levels were at their peak.
