About 200 people walked in celebration and recognition Thursday, winding a route on Commercial Drive to Trout Lake to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Friendship Walk included a traditional First Nations territorial welcome, music, dances and speeches from community leaders.

National Indigenous Peoples Day was first recognized 22 years ago and has been held on the day of the summer solstice (June 21) since.

“Today, we celebrate the diverse cultures, knowledge and history of Indigenous peoples, and come together in the spirit of reconciliation and renewal,” Premier John Horgan said in a statement. “Our government recognizes our responsibility to advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and work together to right historical wrongs.”
