June is the month of strawberries, and there’s no better way to celebrate than watching the first full moon of the month – also known as the “strawberry moon.”

Tonight, at 9:53 p.m., the moon will be at its most colourful state. According to Space.Com, when the moon crosses paths with Saturn – which will be closer to Earth than any other time of the year – it will appear pinkish as it rises and sets.

For the best view of the strawberry moon, head to the outskirts of the city where the sky is not obstructed by tall buildings.

The strawberry moon, also known as the “rose moon” or the “lotus moon”, got its name as a signal to the Indigenous people of Canada that strawberries were ripening.

While the U-pick season might be coming to an end, there are still plenty of local farm stands available throughout Richmond where families can visit and purchase fresh produce.

The Kwantlen St. Farmers Market that takes place every Tuesday is a great option and so is the Steveston Farmers & Artisan Market.

CanWest Farms Ltd. On Blundell Road and G. S. Farms on No. 4 will also have more strawberries in early July.

Grab your strawberries before they are all gone and remember to look up at the sky tonight to experience the full strawberry moon.
