TransLink has announced that work on its Expo Line rail replacement project will start Monday evening (July 2) and commuters should expect late-night delays.

Crews will be working to replace six km of rail and 11,000 rail pads starting at 9:30 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday until the end of service.

After 9:30 p.m. commuters will need to switch trains at Stadium-Chinatown Station to continue in either direction.

Trains between Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown Station will run every 10 minutes and TransLink advises commuters to allow and extra five to 10 minutes of travel time if they're going through the area.

The first part of the project focuses on the Dunsmuir Tunnel between Stadium-Chinatown and Waterfront stations and crews will move to Main Street-Science World Station in early 2019.

TransLink says exceptions will be made for special events such as the Celebration of Light fireworks.

The work is part of the TransLink Maintenance and Repair Program, which is replacing about 5,000 linear metres of running rail annually. The program includes upgrading SkyTrain stations, adding SkyTrain cars and buses and replacing six escalators at Granville Station.
