Fans of then '90s Japanese manga and TV series Sailor Moon are gathering in Vancouver today for International Sailor Moon Day to celebrate the show's legacy.

The series follows middle school student Usagi Tsukino who is given special powers and joins forces with other Sailor Soldiers to defend the earth from various enemies. Events are held around the world to mark International Sailor Moon Day on June 30, which is the heroine's birthday.

"The reason Sailor Moon grew so popular with western fans was because it was the first TV series that focused on female empowerment," says Tony Tieu, founder of Van Expo, which is organizing the event.

Attendees can watch screenings, win prizes, compete in a Fandom Feud-hosted trivia competition, view art by local artists and get a photo or autograph from Sailor Moon's English voice actor Tracey Moore.

Fans are encouraged to dress up as their favourite character and meet local special guest cosplayer @neosailormoonotaku. The day ends with a dance party hosted by DJ Jewel Maiden and VJ Base64.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre which works to end all forms of violence against women. Organizers hope to educate the public on this important cause and highlight "the importance of freedom from violence and respect for all individuals."

International Sailor Moon Day runs from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Vancouver Downtown at 1110 Howe Street and tickets are available at the door.
