A new survey from RetailMeNot.ca finds that 41 per cent of Canadians are spending more during the summer months and 60 per cent say they are trying to cut back.

The survey reveals that only 19 per cent of Canadians make a point to save during the first half of the year so they can spend more money in the summer on vacations and other activities.

What Canadians say they spend money on in the summer:

  • 29 per cent of summer costs are spent on gas, travel and accommodations
  • 26 per cent of the total summer spend is on groceries
  • 21 per cent of Canadians' summer costs are spent on dinners out and entertainment
  • While the remaining 24 per cent of summer costs are spent on:

    -Clothing

    -Alcohol

    -Gifts

-Beauty products and personal care items

    -Sporting activities

Only 23 per cent of the people surveyed say they feel like their finances get out of control in the summer and 31 per cent worry they won't be able to afford everything they need to buy.

About 82 per cent spent most of their money in their home province instead of traveling.

The online survey of 1521 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Maru Voice Canada panelists was conducted from June 8 to June 10 and executed by Maru/Blue.
