The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is sending multiple crews on a search for a 73-year-old man who went overboard from a cruise ship headed back to Vancouver.

The USCG says the man went overboard off Cape Flattery, Washington, around the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca from the cruise ship Seven Seas Mariner, which departed from Vancouver for Alaska on June 30.

The man was last seen by his wife around 4 a.m., who reported that she was woken up around 4:30 a.m. by a breeze coming from the balcony door cracked open.

The captain of the vessel confirmed that a ship video shows a passenger going into the water from the 8th deck balcony at 4:15 a.m. It's not clear whether he fell or jumped.

The USCG has send the crew of the Cutter Wahoo, a boat crew from Station Neah Bay and an aircrew from Air Station Port Angeles/Sector Field Office.

Crews continue to search for the man and no further details have been provided. The ship was destined to arrive in Victoria on July 10 and in Vancouver on July 11.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria is providing air assistance but the incident is out of its jurisdiction because it happened in American waters.
