Earlier this week a video was posted to Instagram of a frightening encounter with a bear on the Elaho River, just north of Squamish.

The clip shows a man in a kayak being charged by a grizzly. Floating above the man is a crew of rafters from Wedge Rafting, a company which does regular guided trips down the river.

The kayaker is shown paddling as fast as he can down the river, and the bear eventually loses interest.

Sightings of black bears are common along the Elaho and Squamish rivers, but grizzly encounters are a more rare occurrence. If you're heading up that way - to hike, camp, kayak, whatever - you're going to want to pack bear spray.
