Help those in need by filling up a bag with wholesome canned foods and grains for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank's (GVFB) third annual Citywide Food Drive.

Volunteers will be dropping empty, marked paper bags on doorsteps across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore early in September.

"We really focus on nutritious foods that people can either eat on their own or that they can use to cook really simple meals," says Cynthia Kinsella, the GVFB's chief development officer.

The GVFB's top 10 most wanted items are:

  • Canned chicken or turkey
  • Canned fish
  • Canned black beans chickpeas and kidney beans
  • Packaged dried lentils
  • Natural peanut butter
  • Brown rice
  • Packaged barley or oats in sealed packages
  • Packaged whole wheat pasta or couscous
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned fruit
  • Hearty stew or chili

Donors can leave the full bags on their doorsteps before 9 a.m. on September 15 to be picked up by volunteers.

People can contribute to the Citywide Food Drive by donating online and the food bank will be able to convert every dollar into $3 worth of food by buying in bulk for about 27,000 who access the food bank every week.

Volunteers will also be at Save On Foods on Brooksbank in North Vancouver, Save On Foods on Kingsway & Willingdon in Burnaby and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on West 41st in Vancouver on September 15th to collect non-perishable food donations.
