Kids, politicians, police officers and firefighters competed in the fifth annual Raycam Soapbox Derby, racing down a winding, hay bale-enforced course behind the Raycam Community Centre.

Held Aug. 17, the day-long event showcased and celebrated the efforts of NASKARZ (Never Again Steal Karz). The program, launched 20 years ago by youth worker Alex Vasiljevic and Vancouver Police sergeant Tim Houchen, gives at-risk youth an opportunity to “combat the impacts of poverty and crime” by learning to restore cars, gain experience in the trades and develop other life skills.
