Here's where to get fresh sockeye salmon in Metro Vancouver

With an abundance of wild sockeye salmon available during August and September there's never been a better time to shop around and get thinking of creative recipes.

The Pacific Salmon Commission is forecasting a run that will bring in an estimated 8.4 million and 23 million fish.

If you're considering trying your hand at fishing we have a guide with tips on how to get started but if you're not interested in catching your own there are plenty of places to find freshly caught sockeye in Metro Vancouver.

Check out our list for a few ideas of where to go and the prices you can expect to find:

Major grocery stores

Whole Foods: Fillets for $4.99 per 100 grams and whole fish for $2.99 per l00 grams.

Save-On-Foods: Fillets on sale $2.49 per 100 grams until Thursday, August 23 and $3.99 regular price.

Specialty seafood stores

FISH Market (Fresh Ideas Start Here): Fillets for $3.52 per 100 grams (15 per pound) and whole fish for $12 per pound. They have buy in bulk option -- purchase 30 pounds of fish and it is $10 per pound. They have a location in Burnaby and Kitsilano.

Longliner Seafoods: Fillets are $25 per pound and whole fish are $16 per pound. Located inside the Granville Island Public Market.

The Daily Catch: Whole Fraser River sockeye for $14.60 per pound or fillets for $24.49 per pound or $5.49 per 100 grams. Located on Commercial Drive.

Directly from the fishers

False Creek Fisherman's Wharf(the docks across from Creekside Park): Organic Ocean $10 per pound for hook-and-line caught whole sockeye. Fillets are frozen and call for details on pricing.

Elliott Street Wharf in Ladner:Public fish sales run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 7 days a week until September 30. A sign spotted in the area lists sockeye for $6 per pound.

The Public Fish Sales Float, Fisherman's Wharf in Steveston: The Public Fish Sales Float is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week but vessels and vendors come and go as they please.

The best days to go are Friday afternoons or Saturday and Sunday during normal business hours. Fresh Fraser River sockeye salmon is going for as low as $5 per pound.
