Winter is coming — but not to Vancouver.

Game of Thrones fans who were looking forward to the North American kick-off of the Live Concert Experience at Rogers Arena are having to consider a trek to Seattle instead.

Vancouver fans were hoping to get a few glimpses of what season 8 of Game of Thrones will hold at the Sept. 5 live concert experience. With no explanation, ticket holders for the September 5 Vancouver launch were given a refund. The show had been cancelled.

As a result, the musical extravaganza will get its start in Seattle on Sept. 6.

This is the second year for the concert tour which features series composer Ramin Djawadi orchestrating music from the show along with footage and pyrotechnics.

What is particularly appealing to Game of Thrones fans is that Djawadi told Variety magazine that the show is like “a two-hour trailer for the next season. You really get a breakdown of the characters and the plot.”

“I decided to make this a hybrid,” Djawadi said in the article, “between the traditional orchestra concert and more contemporary things that you might see in a rock concert, pyro, snow … It embraces the audience more.”

Did he really say “snow”?

There has been some speculation that high ticket prices fell hard on Vancouver fans’ enthusiasm. Prices ranged from $70 to more than $200.

Perhaps the cancellation was a result of low ticket sales.

LiveNation is overseeing the North American leg of the international tour. The Couriersent LiveNation an emailed query about why the Vancouver concert has been cancelled but has not received a response.

Ticketmaster has provided refunds to Vancouver ticket holders. The only remaining Canadian dates are Oct. 12 in Montreal and Oct. 14 in Toronto.

In the meantime, season eight of Game of Thrones is expected to air on HBO in the first half of 2019.
