Someone tried to steal an ATM from a local liquor store

It’s not clear what’s anchoring the ATM inside Steveston Liquor Store, but whatever it is, it’s too solid for thieves. A thief or thieves broke into the Third Avenue premises, wrapped a heavy chain around the ATM and tried to yank it from its mooring.

Richmond RCMP were called to the scene of the break-in just before 6 a.m. The store is connected to the Buck & Ear pub; both are owned and operated by the Joseph Richard Group.

It’s not clear what the thieves were using to try and break the machine free from the floor, but they failed in their bid, as the photo shows.

According to Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang, the “suspect or suspects had fled the scene prior to police arrival.

“The investigation is on-going and we are reviewing all available evidence. The Integrated Forensics Identification Service (IFIS) is assisting us.”
