Abandoned fishing net entraps and kills five seals in the Fraser River

A "Ghost net" found floating in the Fraser contained five seals who likely drowned in it. A gillnet used for salmon fishing, it's unclear who the owner is.

CBC shot and shared footage this week of an abandoned fishing net near the mouth of the Fraser River, containing the corpses of five harbour seals believed to have drowned in it.

The variety of net is a gillnet, and its used by commercial operators to catch salmon.

It's unclear who the original owner of the net is, but they note that these "ghost nets" are "a colossal problem, with at least 640,000 tons of fishing gear being lost or abandoned in the world's oceans every year."
