Known as Vancouver's Little Italy, Commercial Drive is set to get four colourful crosswalks painted red, white, and green of the Italian flag.

FortisBC partnered with the Commercial Drive community to paint crosswalks at intersections along the Drive, and the work will start with the crosswalks at the intersection of Commercial Drive and East 1st Ave.

“It is a privilege to serve this community. In funding these new crosswalks, we would like to say thank you by adding some more colour to an already vibrant community," said Doug Stout, vice-president, market development and external relations, FortisBC in an e-mailed statement.

The project comes after the intersection of Commercial Drive and East 1st Ave had been partially closed over the summer. Fortis BC wanted to show their appreciation to the community for its patience during its gas line upgrades, and also to celebrate the community's rich history.

Fortis BC will provide all of the funds for the project.

“We would like to thank FortisBC for funding these new crosswalks. Vancouver’s Commercial Drive is already iconic and this will help add to the character of the neighbourhood," said Carmen D’Onofrio, president of the Commercial Drive Business Society via e-mail.

The Drive's Little Italy covers eight city blocks that represent over 60 years of Italian heritage.

The next three crosswalk locations have yet to be announced.
