The next program in the Fraser River Discovery Centre’s BioDiversity Speaker Series will take place this Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island.

“Thousands of migratory birds spend time in the Fraser Basin each year, including the famous Canadian snow geese,” said Stephen Bruyneel, executive director of the Fraser River Discovery Centre.
“We feel very fortunate that Dr. Rob Butler will be join us at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta to lead us through what should be a fun and fascinating afternoon looking at these geese and other birds.”
Butler is an adjunct professor of biological sciences at SFU. An ornithologist, author, filmmaker and artist, he has spent 40 years researching birds, mostly with the Canadian Wildlife Service as a biologist.
His research career began with the social behaviour of crows followed by the ecology of great blue herons that led to the publishing of The Great Blue Heron (UBC Press) in 1997, and then to the migration and ecology of shorebirds.
Funded primarily by the Sitka Foundation, the BioDiversity Speaker Series hopes to increase public awareness and understanding of Fraser River biodiversity. Each of the sessions in the series will feature local biodiversity experts leading walking tours that provide a hands-on opportunity to learn about the biodiversity of the mighty River.
Tickets to the event are $5 per person or $15 per family, and include entrance to the bird sanctuary. They can be purchased online.
