New arcade-inspired pub, The Study, opening on SFU Burnaby campus

It's been a year with one less food and drink option on the Simon Fraser University Burnaby campus, following the closure of the Highland Pub. But the dry spell is over soon, thanks to the impending opening of The Study Public House, a new pub operated by Metro Vancouver's Joseph Richard Group.

The hospitality company behind many B.C. and Alberta pub-style restaurants, including several popular outposts in the Fraser Valley, has partnered with SFU to create a space that offers "better social experiences for students," according to a media release.

The Study aims to serve as a "social hub" on the campus, offering food that emphasizes "local, craft, made-from-scratch, fair trade and sustainable products" and staff that deliver top-quality customer service.

In the fall of 2017, SFU noted that they intended to put forth changes in their campus pub operation, including changing the venue's liquor-primary licence to a food-primary, which would open up the customer base and experience opportunities.

JRG has been hard at work revitalizing the 50-year old campus pub space, including not only renovating the dining room, but also converting a portion of the venue for gaming fun. "The lower area of the pub space is being outfitted as an arcade which will include vintage pinball machines, shuffle board games, and ping-pong tables," reports SFU's Peak.

"We are very excited for the launch of The Study Public House and this partnership with SFU. Their vision to enhance their student and campus experience aligns seamlessly with JRG's guest experience benchmark" explained Ryan Moreno, CEO and Co-Founder of the Joseph Richard Group in a media release.

JRG will also work with SFU to provide a catering service for the campus, which will be served from The Study's kitchen.

Currently The Study Public House is in the hiring process, as well as completing their work inside the space.

"With our store being uniquely located in a university campus with a city community behind it, we are expecting to see large volumes of business all over. What is especially exciting is the way the kitchen is built, we are in the works to not only execute our public house menu, but as well, execute large catered events," reads a Craigslist job posting for The Study.

Currently The Study is aiming for a late fall opening. They are located at 8888 University Drive (Maggie Benston Centre) on the SFU campus in Burnaby.
