With just a few days until Halloween, Vancouver first responders are reminding the public of a few tips on staying safe.

“We just really want you to be safe,” said Marilyn Oberg, paramedic chief with B.C. Ambulance Service.

She said paramedics typically see a lot of injuries from people slipping or tripping and falling, as well as burns and other injuries from the improper use of fireworks.

“Definitely with the fireworks we’ve seen some nasty things.”

Vancouver police media relations officer, Const. Jason Doucette, said the department usually sees a spike in calls the weekend around Halloween, which is next Wednesday. He said there will be additional officers out this weekend on the Granville strip, and officers will conduct extra patrols around parks and schools.

Last year the department saw a 50 per cent increase in calls on the Saturday night before Halloween.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services is reminding the public that anyone buying and setting off fireworks must be 19 or older and have a permit, which can be obtained on the city’s website.

Halloween safety tips

Costumes:

  • Ensure any fake weapons are clearly identifiable as imitation.
  • Be visible. Add reflective tape, glow sticks or flashlights to your costume.
  • Make sure you can see. Use make up instead of a mask

Fireworks:

  • You must be 19 or older to get a permit to buy and light fireworks.
  • Fireworks can only be set off on Halloween night on private property.
  • Fireworks must be purchased from a licenced retailer.
  • Be familiar with what is legal and what isn’t. Roman candles, bottle rockets and firecrackers are illegal.
  • Failure to comply with the rules can result in a $500 fine.
  • Use fireworks responsibly – make sure to read and follow all directions.

Drivers:

  • Be patient and slow down. Excited trick or treaters may not be looking for vehicles.
  • If you plan on consuming alcohol or cannabis, have a designated driver, take transit or call a cab.
