Horin Ramen + Sake: New noodle shop joins Robson's 'Ramen Row'

Noodle fans, there's a fresh new spot on Robson Street's "Ramen Row" for slurping by the bowlful. Horin Ramen + Sake has opened their doors after months and months of waiting for the restaurant to be ready.

Specializing in pork tonkotsu broth with their signature spicy sauce, Horin is linked to ramen shops of the same name in Fukuoka, Japan. Their recipe for broth with a signature spicy sauce dates back to 1966, as created by Sadayuki and Keiko Nakahara in Japan.

Horin has just recently opened their doors, and has a trim menu that is easily customized. The ramen comes with their tonkotsu broth, and can be had with egg, with extra meat, and with the noodle doneness (soft, regular, firm), spice level, saltiness, and amount of lard tailored to your liking.

The noodles are made in-house--you can watch them being made in the front window--and the soup is delivered extremely quickly. The broth, ordered with the "standard" middle-of-the-road amount of spice, noodle firmness, salt, and lard, has a pleasing depth of flavour, and the thin noodles a nice flavour and snap. The pork is thinly-sliced and while a bit uneven in terms of texture offers a great meaty taste and a nice foil for the spice and onions.

Open daily, Horin is transitioning from their soft open mode and menu, and has created an eastward expansion of Robson's "Ramen Row," and a worthy new option for noodle fans in the neighbourhood.
