An ultra-contemporary house in Squamish that was one of the grand prize options in B.C. Children’s Hospital Choices Lottery was listed mere weeks after it wasn’t chosen by the winner in May this year, and is still on the market for $1.95 million.

The winner of the 2018 spring draw opted for the $2.2 million in tax-free cash, which means all the homes they could have picked from were returned to their original owners and developers.

The Squamish home package was billed by B.C. Children’s Hospital Choices Lottery as worth $2.5 million, which included the ultra-modern new home, as well as a new Tesla, $30K in furnishings and $300K in cash. That puts the lottery organizer’s estimate of the home value at just over $2.1 million.

However, B.C. Assessment pegged its value at $1,568,000 in July 2017, and the owner listed it at $1.95 million on May 26. As of October 30, 2018, the home is still available for purchase.

So why hasn’t this desirable home sold yet? Co-listing agent Tom Malpass told Glacier Media, “The market has softened in the high-end range. We’ve had offers on this house, we just haven’t been able to get to an agreement. You kind of have to go to the market right now, the market isn’t coming to you.”

He added, “I have a relationship with the lottery, so when there’s a chance to enter a home into the lottery, we ask our clients if they would be willing to go under contract with B.C. Children’s and get their house tied up for a few months, because of the free exposure.”
