While the Metro Vancouver forecast is calling for plenty of rain, Environment Canada is predicting that other parts of the province will see snow.

What's more, the department is also calling for a hazardous snowstorm on the Coquihalla highway tonight. Specifically, they have a winter storm warning in effect from Hope to Merritt on the B.C. highway.

The forecast also predicts that light snow will become heavy by the evening. In fact, it calls for 20 to 30 cm of new snow accumulation by tonight and early Friday morning.

The storm will be caused by a frontal storm system crossing the southern B.C. interior later this evening. Specifically, a moist southwest flow will produce the heavy amounts of snowfall on the passage. The snow will taper off on Friday, however, as the system moves further to the east.

Due to the hazardous conditions, drivers should prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow, and therefore it is advised to stay alert at all times.

It is the responsibility of the operator of a vehicle in B.C. to understand the conditions on roads they regularly drive and equip their vehicle for those conditions. As such, anyone driving on one of these highways should ensure that they have legal winter tires. Mountain snowflake tires offer better traction on snow and ice.
