There are endless things to do in Vancouver during the winter, but it can be a great deal of fun to explore the rest of B.C. during the chilly months.

That is especially true during the month of January, when one West Kootenay city puts on an epic winter carnival.

Located at an elevation of 3356 feet, the City of Rossland provides the ideal stomping grounds for frosty fun. The Rossland Winter Carnival takes place from January 25 until January 28, and offers a litany of fun activities.

Starting on Thursday, January 25, the festival kicks off with a variety show and a line-up of live music acts. Following this, guests may view breathtaking snow sculptures, as well as compete in hilarious snowshoe and potato sack races. They also have a parent and child toboggan pull race, which is followed with tasty hot chocolate and hot apple cider.

At 6 pm, the City of Rossland Carnival Parade will make its way down Columbia Ave. Participants most don festive attire or have their own float. There will be prizes for Best Group Float, Best Business Float, and Best Spirit of Carnival. Following the parade there will be an awe-inspiring fire show, which will be followed by live music.

Saturday begins with a scrumptious pancake breakfast, and then the amazing Sonny Samuelson Bobsled Race flies down Spokane Street. Afterwards, attendees are encouraged to build their best frosty creation in the Rossland Museum’s 4th Annual Snowman-Making Competition. There will also be a thrilling display of alpine talents at the fantastic “The Game” Rail Jam competition.

Have a look at the way the city comes alive for this frosted affair.
