These were the most popular baby names in B.C. in 2018

The province's Ministry of Health recently released a brief on baby name trends in B.C. in 2018.

There hasn't been much change to the list over the last couple of years, and when it comes to girls' names, hardly any movement at the top of the heap: Olivia has been the most-chosen name for girls in B.C. for six of the past seven years. It's leading for 2018, too, followed by Amelia, Charlotte, Chloe, Ava, Sophia, Isla, Emily and Hannah. Of those names, only Isla is new to the top 10 names for girls province-wide for 2018.

Liam, a popular diminutive for William, rose to the top, besting 2017 top pick Benjamin. No worries, though--there will be tons of Bens, Bennys, and Benjis in baby playgroup this year--the name remains on the top ten list, in fourth position. For 2018 in B.C., the top ten names are, in order: Liam, Lucas, Oliver, Benjamin, Ethan, Noah, Logan, William, James, and Leo. Leo is the newbie to the top 10 for 2018.

As of the morning of Dec. 31, 2018, there had been been 40,565 babies born in B.C. in 2018 – 19,821 girls and 20,744 boys.

We now know the first baby born in B.C. in 2019 was born in New Westminster at 12:01 a.m. on New Year's Day. Bucking the trends, the proud parents named their new son Dominick.
