At about 2:15 a.m. on Jan. 1, RCMP officers on foot patrol on the Village Stroll observed a fight that had broken out north of the Ted Nebbeling Bridge involving multiple people. Officers intervened and deployed pepper spray in the melee. While in the process of arresting one of the individuals involved, police say a 23-year-old California man bit an attending officer, who was treated for minor injuries.

Mounties ultimately took five males into custody, four of whom were subsequently released without charges. The California man was released on a promise to appear in court on charges of assaulting a peace officer.

Whistler RCMP said it responded to 26 calls for service between 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 2 a.m. on Jan. 1, “for mostly minor issues,” according to a release.
