Avalanche risk in the alpine area of the North Shore mountains is considered high to extreme heading into the weekend.

Avalanche Canada’s rarely used Extreme danger rating on the South Coast means major life-threatening slides, both natural and human caused, are a certainty in avalanche terrain, which should be avoided at all costs.

“The combination of intense snowfall, heavy rain, and extreme wind will cause large and widespread storm slab avalanches,” the forecast from Avalanche Canada stated. “Heavy rain falling on fresh snow will trigger loose, wet avalanches.”

The danger rating in the alpine area is expected to remain at High, until Saturday, at least.
