A music teacher who told Grade 6/7 students how B.C. serial killer Robert Pickton fed prostitutes’ remains to pigs and that they could be killed by a serial killer if they hitchhiked has been reprimanded for professional misconduct.

The B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation said Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows teacher Tracy Joseph Fairley lacked insight into his conduct and discussed material that had nothing to do with the subject he was teaching.
The decision, dated Jan. 4 but released online Jan. 15, said Fairley also told students about seeing a teenager die in a Hawaiian ocean undertow and about being scammed to buy expensive drinks in a Hawaiian bar.
Fairley also admitted he had videotaped a Grade 5 class playing marimbas, telling them he would give the recording to a music producer and give them copies.
“Fairly made the recording so he could show his wife. He never had any intention of sharing it with a music producer,” commissioner Howard Kushner’s decision said. “He misled the students in the class.”
The commissioner called the discussions inappropriate.
The events occurred in January 2018 when Fairley was an on-call teacher.
The school reported the situation to the commissioner in May 2018.
Fairley has been a qualified teacher in B.C. since 1988. He resigned from the school district in August 2018.
Fairley could not be located for comment.
