Surrey RCMP have identified and arrested a 19-year-old suspect who is charged in relation to an alleged indecent act involving an assault on a 10-year-old girl.

The incident took place on January 10 around 3 pm on the 6200 block of 144 Street, near Sullivan Heights Secondary School, when the girl was walking behind the school. According to a release, an unknown man grabbed the girl’s hoodie from behind and then proceeded to expose his genitalia. Following this, the victim screamed and the suspect fled.

Following the incident, investigators released a photo of the suspect on January 30. As a result of the photo, the public was able to assist police in identifying the individual.

“Incidents like this one are very upsetting for the victim and the community as a whole,” said Staff Sargent Lyndsay O’Ruairc, of the Surrey RCMP Vulnerable Persons Section.

“Thank you to the members of the public who came forward to assist us in our investigation.”

The suspect was arrested and subsequently released, but he will appear in court at a later date. In addition, his conditional release requires him not to not to contact anyone under the age of 16, and to stay away from locations where persons under the age of 16 are present or can reasonably be expected to be present.

Charges have not yet been laid in court as the investigation is on-going.
