B.C. is getting a brand new, province-wide area code this week

A new B.C. area code will provide area code relief to the province approximately one year before the CRTC predicts the current numbers will be exhausted.

As British Columbia's population grows, the number of available cellphone numbers shrinks. As such, the CRTC has announced that the province will receive a brand new area code.

Currently, the 604 area code services the Lower Mainland while the 250 one services the rest of the province; area codes 236 and 778 cover all of B.C.

Now, the agency will introduce a new area code as of Saturday, May 4.

And what will the new B.C. area code be?

"In Telecom Decision 2011-451, the Commission directed the CNA to set aside area code 672 for area code relief in British Columbia," reads the report.

The 672 area code will provide relief approximately one year before the agency believes that the current numbers will exhaust. In addition, the commission determined that, "the entire area served by area codes 236, 250, 604, and 778 is to be overlaid with a new area code."
