B.C. makes appearance in new Sonic the Hedgehog trailer

Several areas of Vancouver Island, including Ladysmith and Fanny Bay, are featured in the $90-million adaptation of the 1990s video game.

Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Vancouver Island took centre stage Tuesday in the live-action trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog, the first big-screen adaptation to star the beloved 1990s video game character.

The trailer opens with footage of a forested patch of road on Highway 19 near Bowser, which is made to look like the fictional town of Green Hills.

Carrey plays bad-guy Dr. Robotnik in the film, while James Marsden plays a San Francisco cop who discovers Sonic the Hedgehog and helps him save Earth.

Other areas of Vancouver Island, including Ladysmith and Fanny Bay, are featured in the $90-million adaptation, which hits theatres in November. Sonic the Hedgehog was filmed in part on Vancouver Island last year, with primary footage shot in New York and San Francisco.

Sonic the Hedgehog was expected to be one of the big titles on Paramount Pictures’ year-end schedule, but the trailer drew a very mixed reaction Tuesday, with some critics lampooning the CGI of the video game character.
